TEA new chapter of collaboration was penned in Cebu as cooperatives from Cebu City, Mandaue City, and Lapu-Lapu City converged for the inaugural Tri-City Cooperative Month Celebration. Hosted at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City, the landmark event—anchored on the powerful theme, “Cooperatives: United in Purpose and Action, Sharing Prosperity to Build a Better World”—marked a historic show of solidarity among the region’s cooperative sector.
A Day of Movement and Reflection
The celebration began with a magnificent display of unity: a grand 6:00 AM motorcade. Convoys from Cebu City and Mandaue merged en route to Lapu-Lapu, culminating in an estimated 2,000 participants gathering to kick off the day.
A highlight of the program was an immediate, heartfelt moment of community concern. Participants observed a solemn recitation of the Oratio Imperata, a prayer offered for those affected by the recent magnitude 6.9 earthquake centered in Bogo City. This act served as a poignant reminder that the mission of cooperatives extends beyond economic gain, underscoring their critical role in providing emotional and social support during times of disaster. CDA 7 Regional Director Cristina Villamil later echoed this sentiment, using the event rationale to emphasize the need for cooperatives to mobilize their resources to directly aid earthquake victims and survivors.
Leaders Rally for Action and Collaboration
In a tangible display of Bayanihan (communal unity), the organizing committee immediately launched an onsite cash donation drive called “PESOforCEBU – Tabang Gikan sa Kooperatiba,” making an initial call for all participating cooperatives to contribute to the relief effort.
Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Hon. Ma. Cynthia King-Chan delivered a warm welcome message, expressing her city's immense pride in hosting this first-of-its-kind event and championing the cooperatives' integral part in fostering inclusive local development.
Support for the sector was robust across all cities. Cebu City Councilor Hon. Mikel F. Rama, Chairman of the Committee on Cooperatives, passionately advocated for continued collaboration and innovation. Cong. Junard Chan of Lapu-Lapu City’s Lone District also graced the proceedings, asserting his commitment to the movement by championing legislation that empowers cooperatives. His conviction was clear: “When cooperatives thrive, our communities thrive!”

Festive Spirit and a New Tradition
The atmosphere was electric, balancing serious purpose with vibrant celebration. A cultural standout was the musical performance by the Basak Sudtonggan Kabataan Strings, a talented local youth ensemble whose artistry captivated the audience.
Adding an element of friendly rivalry and spectacle, the event featured the first-ever Tri-City Cooperative Festival Queen competition. Candidates showcased the unique grace and spirit of Cebu, Mandaue, and Lapu-Lapu, with the home crowd erupting in cheers as the representative of Lapu-Lapu City was crowned the inaugural winner.
The momentous gathering concluded with a symbolic gesture to cement its future. Following the day’s inspiring agenda, a turnover of hosting responsibilities officially took place. Cebu City, represented by Hon. Mikel F. Rama, proudly accepted the torch to host the 2026 Tri-City Cooperative Month celebration, firmly establishing the event as an annual regional tradition.
Wrapping up the day's successes were fun games, prizes, and a spontaneous, lively closing community dance that saw leaders, members, and guests joyfully unite on the dance floor.
The First Tri-City Cooperative Month Celebration was more than a single event; it was a defining moment for the cooperative movement in Region 7. It stands as a powerful testament to the exponential impact achieved when local governments, cooperatives, and communities align toward a shared vision of prosperity for all.
